For several years VPN services have become very big, and a big reason for this is the increased amount of BitTorrent users. Many people using these services see it more as an everyday thing rather than a luxurious pleasure, so ensuring the security of what you do should be taken more seriously.

Despite VPN’s offering a quality option for BitTorrent services it does have some drawbacks and there are a few tricks you can put up your sleeve to improve the security of doing so.

Using a VPN service that keeps you anonymous is much better than using one that leaves you exposed, however there are times when something may go wrong and extra security can keep things on a level base.

So what do you do if the VPN service you are using suddently fails whilst you are not at your computer and you are exposed to people seeing your IP address, well there are options to rectify this situation. By changing the firewall rules or by changing TCP/IP routes you are able to regain that level of security. Some people may not want to start fiddling around with the configuration but believe me it will be worth the effort.

Creators have made available 2 free pieces of software to help achieve this, namely VPNetMon and VPNCheck, go check them out on google and see what specific benefits they bring.

There is another way to hide your activity, especially if you not trust your VPN provider completely. If you use 2 VPN’s you can feed one connection through another, this is easily done in WIndows and it essentially creates a tunnel through a tunnel and makes it near impossible for any data to be read by the VPN service or third parties.

If you are looking to be completely anonymous then when paying for a VPN service you can use an untraceable currency. Sign up for an anonymous email account with Tor for example and then use Bitcoin to send payments and you are using encrypted methods to hide your identity.

Finally you can choose a VPN service that has privacy high up on it’s offerings. Choose a company who doesn’t log data of its users and then any third parties wanting to snoop for information will not be able to see what people have been up to.

So, if you’re feeling the vibe of being more secure, and you don’t want big brother watching over you, consider one of these options and it will most definetly help you out.

Can you foresee hopping on the internet in the future and not being able to access Google, Facebook or Twitter ? I sure can’t as I would put these websites amongst the top ten sites I visit each time going online. Well that is something that is happening right now in countries such as China, with major restrictions set in place due to government policy. Why is this happening? Well, that is debatable, and a different answer you would probably get from various people affected by it.

For the internet whizz who uses WordPress and Google Analytics then you are facing intermittent outages and loading times of 10 times longer, not something that is going to help your online work. A one way ticket to the USA I hear you cry, let’s just hope the US government don’t intend to take their restrictions to a similar high.

Instead of the everyday popular website imagine websites that are government owned and operate only in the way that they want them to work. Instead of Google, the search engine that filters only sites they approve of, a social networking site which you register with your real name and passport number. Feeling your privacy being invaded just by reading this? Me too. Many conspiracy theorist would argue that the world is slowly changing and one day the entire world will be under such restrictions. Remember the national ID card?

There are options for citizens of China for example to bypass such restrictions and this is by purchasing access to a VPN. Unfortunately though, these can be slow and even get shut down by one of the 30,000 internet police China have keeping a watchful eye on things. However according to many Chinese citizens, the amount of online piracy is rife, and many would say that if you do not use online piracy to obtain information then you are a fool.

From reading feedback on various online networking sites many people are shocked by the level of restriction, and others are voicing concerns about the USA’s SOPA act which could be introduced. Something that companies such as Wikipedia and Reddit are opposing. Is it a slippery slope for the internet we know and love today into the pit of controlled dictatorship or should free speech and complete internet freedom be kept as it is.

Maybe we’re being too cynical or maybe we’re right to be concerned, only time will tell I guess.

The world sure has a divided opinion on Wikileaks, many support it’s actions and others amongst other feelings believe it creates a threat to society. So what are peoples opinions of the ISP Bahnhof which has managed to create a way of escaping the clutches of Swedens European Data Retention Directive by encypting it’s data via a VPN service.

The ISP host Wikileaks and it was announced via TorrentFreak that all customer traffic will be run through a VPN service that is encrypted.

Bahnhof ISP will then not be able to log any data or information of what their customers do and in turn make it impossible for the directive to track down user activity. This would be a welcome relief to users of Wikileaks who are interested in what they have to say, but at the same time aren’t really wanting to put themselves in a compomising position if their activity were to be monitered.

Cyber security groups however have voiced concerns over these plans and said that ISP Bahnhof could potentially be used by internet users looking to get away with illegal or questionable activity.

Back in 2009 Sweden unveiled what is know in short as IPRED, Intellectual Property RIghts Enforcement Directive, good job there’s an abbreviation, i’m almost out of breath.
This organisation had rights to request personal details of users who were suspected of copyright infringement. The thing is if Bahnhof are not providing any information on their users then the IPRED can’t get any.

People are voicing different opinions on this. One security expert believes it will work out as an advantage to the customers, but questions whether the ISP have given it much though.

He continues to say that the ISP may attract too much piracy and even terror activities. On top of this there was a mention of hackers who might find it a challenge to break into the security of the VPN service used.

You do wonder whether these practices should be questioned by others, especially when so much information and data is kept secret anyhow, isn’t that the way the world works? Wikileaks has outted so much information about the government, can you really trust someone elses opinion?. One decision made by a company will almost definitely be deemed in a negative by someone else.

But I almost forgot, customers who are wanting their information to be made public with Bahnhof can do. It’ll just cost you £8.00 extra a month – you won’t see the hackers queuing up for that one.

A Canadian company, Blacklogic provides VPN service to users around the world. The company advertises its ability to unblock Skype in nations where it may be restricted and to provide people around the world with free and unrestricted access to the Internet at large.

Payment Methods

Blacklogic accepts a variety of payment methods. They include:

Number of IP Addresses

VPN Clients Information

Setup is done manually. Extensive instructions are given on the site.

Common Error Messages

None have been reported.

Logging and Privacy Policy

Blacklogic keeps no customer logs. The service emphasizes this as part of their privacy protection.

Legal Use / Torrent Policy

There are no restrictions listed on the site.

Blacklogic vs. The Competition

Blacklogic offers a solid service with competitive options compared to other providers. The company also offers SSTP encryption, which is a nice feature for Windows 7 users who don’t want to use OpenVPN. The manual setup may be something of an inconvenience for some users who would be more comfortable using one of the VPN services that offers a client that takes care of setup and configuration for you automatically.

Blacklogic Conclusion

Blacklogic doesn’t receive our highest recommendation, but they do offer a good service. The pricing for their packages is attractive and the fact that they don’t keep user logs should be in line with the expectations of those who are purchasing VPN services for privacy.

The company advertises that it provides services in China and that it allows users in the Middle East to surf without restrictions. While this may not be our top rated service, it is a good one and Blacklogic may appeal to some individuals.

Copyright reform may be having a hard time getting pushed through in the US, but that hasn’t stopped the US government from pushing it through in other nations. Colombia’s Bill 201 will implement penalties for copyright violations that are harsher than those that constitute the norms in the rest of the world. It is part of the nation’s drive to develop tighter trade relations with the US.

Provisions: Columbia Bill 201

Anyone found guilty of infringing on a copyright in Columbia if Bill 201 is passed will face some harsh penalties. Mandatory prison terms are part of the bill. There are also provisions that allow people to be fined substantial amounts. This law is even harsher than the US law, according to information from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. This law, for example, does not establish how much copyright infringement is required to trigger these harsh penalties. According to the EFF article, someone who made a CD for their friend may end up facing these penalties.

In the US, copyright length was extended by Congress in the 2000s in a law that was called by detractors the “Mickey Mouse Act” or “Mickey Mouse Law”. The entertainment industry managed to get copyrights extended so that a corporation can own a property for 70 years after they first published it instead of the 50 years specified in the prior rule. This will extend to Columbia, as well, under the terms of the US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, an agreement that the Columbian government signed with the US 6 years ago and which calls for these stricter copyright measures.

RIAA vs. Columbia Bill 201

In the US, monitoring is being implemented by the RIAA to check for copyright violations. US citizens caught committing acts of piracy do not face the types of harsh punishments called for in Bill 201—they usually face lawsuits or IP traffic throttling—but the US government is requiring that those penalties be enforced in other nations.

Internet usage is increasingly being regulated by copyright holders through government free trade agreements into which those copyright holders lobby harsh—some might say draconian—measures to protect their profits. Monitoring Internet traffic is a necessary part of this, but users can stop themselves from being monitored. A VPN service will encrypt traffic so that it cannot be read in transit, making it impossible for anyone to actually see what information is being exchanged or between what computers and servers that information is being exchanged.
